domestic-catThe top cat skin problems are usually due to allergies, fleas, feline acne or ringworm. Proper diagnosis of your cat’s skin problem is an important first step before treating the infected area.

Proper cat skin care will depend on the actual prognosis. For allergies, of course, you need to find out what your cat is allergic to. The skin irritation or hair loss caused by an allergic reaction will clear up once you have determined and removed the allergen. Feline acne is typically caused in very much the same way as human acne.  Use metal instead of plastic bowls and keep your cat’s food and water dishes clean, as this will help keep the bacteria from infecting their chin area.  For serious skin infections caused by fleas or worse, ringworm (which can be transmitted to humans) be sure to take your cat to the vet as soon as possible.  A prescription medication may be the best solution for a faster and less painful recovery. A topical ointment  containing the Omegas may produce quicker healing of the irritated skin or ”hot spots” but be sure to treat the cause as well.
