rottweiler-puppyWorse than having dog skin problems is when your loyal companion is contagious to other pets and possibly humans. Fleas is one such obvious skin problem that greatly effects everyone around them. A more serious skin condition is mange. It is contagious to other animals, especially those sharing living quarters and food.  Mange is unsightly and painful. The condition is caused by burrowing mange mites. Mange is contagious and is spread by contact from infested to non-infested animals. Mange can occur in humans, dogs, cats, horses, sheep, cattle and other animals.

Mange damage can mimic that caused by other dog skin problems, including autoimmune diseases, bacterial infections secondary to flea allergies, and contact dermatitis, making it near impossible to diagnose. If your dog suffers from irritated, itchy skin, make an appointment with the veterinarian. Canine skin damaged by mange and secondary skin infections can take weeks or months to recover, depending on the scope of the problems. Early diagnosis of any potential problems will give you a head start on a cure.
